Refrigerator Removal in Dothan, AL — We Handle the Freon and the Heavy Lifting
By Dothan Junk Removal Co. | Appliance Disposal Guide for Dothan & the Wiregrass
Old refrigerators are not simple to get rid of. They contain refrigerants (Freon and newer alternatives) that require EPA-certified handling. They're heavy — a standard side-by-side runs 250–350 lbs. And most curbside programs won't take them, or if they do, the pickup schedule is weeks out.
Dothan Junk Removal Co. removes refrigerators, freezers, and other large appliances with proper handling. Same-day available in most cases.
The Freon Issue
Refrigerators made before 2010 typically contain R-22 refrigerant (Freon). Newer ones use R-410A, R-134a, or other HFC refrigerants. All of these are regulated — you can't puncture the compressor or vent the lines to the atmosphere. It's an EPA violation with real penalties.
When we haul your refrigerator, it goes to an appliance recycler who recovers refrigerants before crushing the unit. This is standard practice — you don't need to do anything special on your end except not puncture the unit before we get there.
What We Remove
- Standard top-freezer refrigerators

- Mini fridges and bar refrigerators
- Wine coolers and beverage coolers
- Garage spare fridges (the most common call we get)
The garage fridge finally died after 18 years. It was too heavy for me to move alone and too big for my truck. They came the same day I called, had it out in 20 minutes.— Phil H., Dothan
Defrost Before We Arrive
If the refrigerator is running, empty it and shut it off at least 24 hours before pickup. This lets it defrost. A fully-frosted freezer unit that hasn't been defrosted is messier and heavier — and we'd rather not drip thaw water through your kitchen on the way out. If it's already dead and defrosted, we're good to go.
The Garage Fridge Situation
Dothan has a lot of garage fridges — Alabama football watching requires cold drinks, and garages in Dothan don't get cold enough in summer to keep drinks at a reasonable temperature without a dedicated unit. When these die, they become fixtures because nobody wants to deal with moving them. We've gotten old Kenmore chest freezers out of garages that hadn't moved in 15 years. We're good at this.

Can a Working Fridge Be Donated?
Yes. A running refrigerator in decent shape — clean, cold, no major issues — can go to Habitat ReStore or local donation centers. If it's cooling properly and isn't visually destroyed, post it on Facebook Marketplace first. A working fridge goes fast for free pickup. If nobody claims it within 48 hours, call us.
Multiple Appliances?
We can haul a refrigerator, washing machine, dryer, and dishwasher all in one trip. If you're replacing multiple appliances at once, group them and save on the haul cost with a combo job.
