Not everything that leaves your home belongs in a landfill. At Dothan Junk Removal Co., we actively sort every load to maximize donations, recycling, and responsible disposal — and minimize what goes to the landfill. It's not just good for the environment; it's good for the Dothan community.
Our Disposal Hierarchy
- Donate — usable items in reasonable condition go to local charity thrift stores and community organizations in the Dothan area. Furniture, clothing, housewares, and functional electronics all have a second life when donated.
- Recycle — metals, electronics, cardboard, and clean wood are separated for recycling at appropriate facilities. Scrap metal in particular has recycling value we capture.
- Responsible disposal — what can't be donated or recycled goes to licensed disposal facilities that operate under state environmental regulations.
- Landfill — only what's truly not suitable for any of the above categories ends up here.
Most loads we haul have at least some donatable or recyclable content. A typical furniture and appliance cleanout might see 30–50% of the load diverted from landfill through donation and recycling.
What We Donate — And Where
Usable items from Dothan cleanouts are taken to local charity organizations including thrift stores and community programs serving Houston County and the Wiregrass area. Items that commonly get donated:
- Furniture in good structural condition — sofas, tables, dressers, beds
- Working appliances — microwaves, toasters, coffee makers
- Clothing and shoes (bagged)
- Books and media
- Housewares — dishes, pots, pans, linens
- Children's items — toys, clothes, furniture (if safe)
What We Recycle
- Scrap metal — steel appliances, aluminum frames, copper pipe, iron — all go to metal recyclers
- Electronics — TVs, computers, printers, and electronics go to certified e-waste recyclers (not the landfill)
- Cardboard — moving boxes and packing cardboard are recycled
- Tires — taken to licensed tire recycling facilities (per-tire fee applies)
- Old appliances — refrigerants are properly recovered before recycling the metal shell
What We Cannot Accept for Eco-Friendly Handling
- Hazardous waste — paint, chemicals, motor oil (contact Houston County hazardous waste program)
- Asbestos-containing materials (requires licensed abatement)
- Medical waste or sharps
- Biohazardous materials
Why It Matters in Dothan
Dothan's landfill capacity and the surrounding environment benefit from responsible disposal practices. Every appliance that gets recycled instead of dumped means less refrigerant in the environment, less metal in the ground. Every piece of furniture donated means one less purchase someone has to make and one less item manufactured.

Can I request that specific items be donated rather than dumped?
Yes — if you have items you specifically want donated, tell us when we're loading. We'll flag them and prioritize donation drop-off for those pieces.
Do you provide documentation for donated items for tax purposes?
Receipts for donated items come from the receiving charity. We can coordinate the donation handoff and let you know which organization received your items so you can request a receipt directly from them.
Do you charge less if more items can be donated?
Our pricing is based on the total volume we handle and transport — whether it ends up donated or disposed doesn't change our operational cost. But knowing items will be donated is good for our community, and we prioritize it either way.
